Active modified atmosphere storage to preserve the quality of 'San Andreas' strawberries harvest at two ripening stages Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Anami,Jéssica Mayumi; Steffens,Cristiano André; Moreira,Marcelo Alves; Fernandes,Raquel Carlos; Mosquera,Deysi Jhoana Camayo; Amarante,Cassandro Vidal Talamini do.
Abstract This work was carried out to evaluate the effect of fruit ripening stage at harvest (“1/3 ripe” and “3/4 ripe”, respectively with 30% and 75% of red color) and passive modified atmosphere (MA) and active MA (with initial initial low O2 and/or high CO2) on quality of ‘San Andreas’ strawberries, with emphasis on bioactive compounds and metabolites of fermentative metabolism. The treatments evaluated were: control; passive MA [low density polyethylene (LDPE) packaging of 40 µm]; active MA with initial low O2 (1 kPa); active MA with initial high CO2 (30 kPa); and active MA with initial low O2 (1 kPa) and high CO2 (30 kPa). After 14 days of storage (0.5±0.2°C/92±2% RH) followed by two days of shelf life (20±5°C/65±10% RH), fruit weight loss was higher...

Teixeira,Sheila Bigolin; Silva,Joseano Graciliano da; Meneguzzo,Michele Renata Revers; Martins,Andrea Bicca Noguez; Meneghello,Geri Eduardo; Tunes,Lilian Vanussa Madruga de.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to assess the manner in which the presence of green soybean seeds affects their physiological quality. In this study, six lots of soybean seeds of cultivar 5958RSF IPRO with 0, 0, 7, 8, 16 and 18% of green seeds were examined. The tests done included the first germination count, germination, electrical conductivity, field emergence, accelerated aging, emergence speed index, Tetrazolium, length, dry mass and seedling growth curve. Results were tested employing the normality test and analysis of variance, and the means were compared by the Tukey test at 5% probability level, employing the Rbio statistical program. Growth data were analyzed by the nonlinear regression analytical method, using the SigmaPlot 12.0...

Phased oscillations in cell numbers and nitrate in batch cultures of Alexandrium tamarense (Dinophyceae) ArchiMer
Collos, Yves; Hadjadji, Imene; Plisson, Benoit; Cecchi, Philippe; Laabir, Mohamed; Bechemin, Christian; Masseret, Estelle.
Alexandrium tamarense (M. Lebour) Balech strains isolated in spring 2007 from a single bloom in Thau lagoon have been grown in nonaxenic artificial media. For three strains showing large oscillations in biomass (crashes followed by recoveries) on a scale of several days, a significant relationship was observed between changes in cell densities (as in vivo fluorescence) and changes in nitrate concentrations. Increases in cell densities were accompanied by decreases in nitrate, while decreases in cell densities corresponded to increases in nitrate, presumably due to nitrification. Net increases in nitrate could reach up to 15 mu mol N . L(-1) . d(-1) indicating a very active nitrifying archaeal/bacterial population. However, following population crashes,...

Preharvest boron application and its relation with the quality of 'Galaxy' apples after harvest and controlled atmosphere storage Ciência Rural
Brackmann,Auri; Thewes,Fabio Rodrigo; Anese,Rogerio de Oliveira; Linke Junior,Wanderlei.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of preharvest boron application on the physical and chemical quality of 'Galaxy' apples after harvest and in controlled atmosphere storage during eight months, plus seven days of shelf life at 20°C. The experiment was performed with two treatments applied on the field: [1] Control (fruit without boron application) and [2] Foliar application of boron (four applications of 1.5kg ha-1). Findings showed that the boron application promoted a higher ethylene production and respiratory rate and it application also reduced the flesh firmness in relation to the fruits without it. A similar result was obtained after eight months of storage plus seven days of shelf life. The preharvest application of boron...

Quality of pitaya fruit (Hylocereus undatus) as influenced by storage temperature and packaging Scientia Agricola
Freitas,Sérgio Tonetto de; Mitcham,Elizabeth Jeanne.
Pitaya (Hylocereus undatus) is an exotic non-climacteric fruit that reaches its best eating quality when harvested ripe, decreasing thereafter during storage. Our objectives were to determine the best combination of storage temperature and use of perforated plastic bags to maintain the postharvest quality of the fruit. Fruits were stored at 5, 7, or 10 ºC with and without a perforated plastic bag for 20 days, followed by five days at 20 ºC without the bag for shelf-life determination. Storage at 5 ºC, followed by 7 ºC maintained better visual appearance of the pitaya fruit after 20 days, by reducing decay incidence and severity, and maintaining greener bracts compared with fruit stored at 10 ºC. Pitaya fruit stored at 5 ºC without a perforated plastic bag...

'Royal Gala' apple quality stored under ultralow oxygen concentration and low temperature conditions PAB
Weber,Anderson; Brackmann,Auri; Anese,Rogério de Olivera; Both,Vanderlei; Pavanello,Elizandra Pivotto.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the interaction of ultralow oxygen concentrations (ULO) with storage temperatures and carbon dioxide partial pressures and its influence on fruit quality preservation and on the occurrence of physiological disorders in 'Royal Gala' apples. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, with four replicates 25-fruit. ULO conditions (1.0 kPa O2 + 2.0 kPa CO2; 0.8 kPa O2 + 1.5 kPa CO2; 0.8 kPa O2 + 1.0 kPa CO2; 0.6 kPa O2 + 1.5 kPa CO2; and 0.6 kPa O2 + 1.0 kPa CO2) were tested at 0, 0.5 and 1.0°C, in a 5x3 factorial arrangement. Fruit quality and ripening analyses were performed after eight-month storage plus seven days of shelf-life at 20°C. Oxygen partial pressures below 0.8 kPa increased the...

Uncommon disorders and decay in near-isogenic lines of melon and reference cultivars Horticultura Brasileira
Martínez,Juan Antonio; Jowkar,Mohammad-Madi; Obando-Ulloa,Javier Mauricio; Varó,Plácido; Moreno,Eduard; Monforte,Antonio José; Fernández-Trujillo,Juan Pablo.
Postharvest disorders and rots can produce important economic losses in fruits stored for long time for exportation. The genetic and physiological basis of some disorders in melon (Cucumis melo L.) are unknown and particularly the possible relation with climacteric behavior. A collection of melon near-isogenic lines (NILs) (SC3-5 and seven more showing climacteric and two non-climacteric ripening pattern) were analyzed to study genetic and physiological aspects of fruit disorders and rots. Two non-climacteric (Nicolás; Inodorus Group; and Shongwan Charmi PI161375, Conomon Group) and two climacteric cultivars (Fado, Reticulatus Group; Védrantais, Cantaloupensis Group) were used as reference. The field was divided in eight blocks containing one three-plant...

Yield and fruit quality of apple from conventional and organic production systems PAB
Amarante,Cassandro Vidal Talamini do; Steffens,Cristiano André; Mafra,Álvaro Luiz; Albuquerque,Jackson Adriano.
The objective of this study was to assess the yield and fruit quality of apple produced with a conventional and an organic production systems in Southern Brazil. The orchards consisted of alternate rows from 10 to 12-year old 'Royal Gala' and 'Fuji' apple trees on M.7 rootstocks, grown as slender spindles, on 4x6 m spacing. Eighteen apple trees of each cultivar and management system were randomly selected and assessed for nutrition, flowering, fruit set, yield, and fruit quality during two growing seasons (2002/2003 and 2003/2004). The organic management system resulted in lower concentrations of K, Mg, and N in leaves and fruits, and in smaller fruits for both cultivars, and lower fruit yield for 'Fuji' than from the conventional production system. For...
